Sixteen Watareka Prison escapees in custody


Sixteen of the 58 detainees who went missing after being attacked in Malabe on the way to Watareka Prison have been taken into custody, the Prisons Department said.

Commissioner General of Prisons Thushara Upuldeniya said investigations are underway to locate 42 inmates who have not yet surrendered.

On 9 May afternoon, 181 prisoners who had been deployed to institutions around Colombo for vocational training were being transported back to Watareka Prison, when several of them were attacked by protesters in Malabe and 58 went missing.
