Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa pledged to take over the Leadership of the Government and the country if President Gotabaya Rajapaksa resigns immediately.
Premadasa told the media yesterday (11) that the SJB will not take any responsibility for the government or the country until then.
“On the basis of the incumbent President’s resignation, we assure the public that we will bring the prosperity that the public has been yearning for in this country,” he said.
He said that Premier Mahinda Rajapaksa’s violence and repression had devastated the country.
“The peaceful protest that has lasted more than 30 days has been disrupted by Rajapaksa’s political rogues and terrorists. The law should be enforced against all those involved in State terrorism in recent days. The IGP should hold transparent investigations into this situation,” he added.
He further claimed that 500 peaceful protesters have been injured by the Rajapaksa terrorists.
Meanwhile, Chief Opposition Whip Lakshman Kiriella said that Premadasa does not want to be a dummy Prime Minister.
He claimed that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has lost the trust of the local and international communities and must resign immediately.
He said that the no-confidence motion filed by Samagi Jana Balawegaya against the Government is no longer necessary because the Prime Minister has tendered his resignation.
He said that the Secretary-General of Parliament assured him that the Impeachment Motion filed against the Head of State would be debated in Parliament in the following week.
“The motion was entered into the Order Book. The public is questioning the worth of a Head of State who is incapable of ensuring the security of the public, Ministers’ and Parliamentarians’ property, and their lives. There was a 24-hour delay in the government making necessary decisions to ensure security, which claimed the life of one SLPP MP and caused damage to many MPs’ properties,” he added.
Kiriella urged President Rajapaksa to provide the necessary support for the Opposition to begin a new chapter with the nation in mind and step down immediately.
