The President must immediately swear in a Prime Minister and Cabinet and then step down from his position, Tamil National Alliance Media Spokesman M. A. Sumanthiran said.
Speaking to the media yesterday (11), he said President Gotabaya Rajapaksa is responsible for the country’s situation and the entire country has, for more than a month, asked him to step down from his position. He never responded to the public, instead he declared a state of emergency.
“Article 155 (7) of the Constitution states that when the President declares a state of emergency, if the next sitting of Parliament is more than 10 days away, he must also issue another proclamation convening Parliament. However, he has yet to do so, and as a result, the Speaker has requested that the President convene Parliament,” Sumanthiran said.
He added that in such a case, Parliament can meet even without a Prime Minister.
The Cabinet has been dissolved following the resignation of the Prime Minister, and all Secretaries to Ministries have also left their positions, he said. As a result, he stressed that the President must immediately appoint a Prime Minister and swear-in a Cabinet, or else all powers of governance will be with the President.
“The President has lost legitimacy and must resign immediately,” he said.
