Party Leaders’ meeting ends in stalemate

The Party Leaders’ meeting, called yesterday (11) by Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, to discuss possible solutions to resolve current unrest in the country, ended in a stalemate.

The Party Leaders are to meet again today (12) at 9:30 a.m.

During the meeting, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa and Jathika Jana Balawegaya (JJB) Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake stressed they would not take part in a Government under Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s presidency.

They told the party leaders that their condition to participate in an interim Government is that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa resigns.

Premadasa also said if the President cannot step down immediately, a solid timeline for his resignation should be given.

The Speaker told party leaders that he would present a document containing opinions and proposals of party leaders to the President.
