IMF talks will resume

The International Monetary Fund’s (IMF’s) discussions for a new programme (loan) for Sri Lanka will be started only after a new Government is formed in the island, IMF’s Mission Chief Masahiro Nozaki, issuing a statement on 11 May said.

To quote Nozaki’s statement in full: “We are following developments in Sri Lanka closely and are concerned about rising social tensions and violence. On our virtual mission during 9 to 23 May, discussions at the technical level have just started and continue as planned so as to be fully prepared for policy discussions once a new government has been formed. We remain committed to assist Sri Lanka in line with the IMF’s policies.” (PA)
