SI among seven deaths during turmoil

In the turmoil that erupted across the country on 9 May, eight people died and over 200 were injured.

Chairman of the Imaduwa Pradeshiya Sabha A.V. Sarath Kumara died after an attack on his apartment on 9 May night, while a 24-year-old Police Sub-Inspector died after a tear gas rifle detonated during the tensions at Temple Trees.

The Sub-Inspector died after being admitted to the Colombo National Hospital.

Meanwhile, a senior citizen at the GotaGoGama demonstration in Galle Face died of a heart attack, while undergoing treatment. Further, over 200 protesters were admitted to the Colombo National Hospital, while about 23 were admitted to the Colombo South Teaching Hospital, Kalubowila. Following a shooting in Nittambuwa, three people were killed and five others were injured. The victims have been named as SLPP MP Amarakeerthi Athukorala, his driver, and a 27-year-old youth.The five injured people were eventually taken to Wathupitiwala Hospital. Two people were killed in a shooting near the Weeraketiya Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman’s home. Eight others were admitted to the Weeraketiya Hospital and later moved to the Tangalle Base Hospital.
