President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has assured that a new Prime Minister and Cabinet will be appointed in the coming week.
Delivering a special address to the nation this evening (11), Rajapaksa noted that he will appoint a Premiere and Cabinet “that has the confidence of the house and the general public”.
Further, he noted that constitutional reforms will be looked at subsequently, and that the 19th Amendment will be reintroduced, allowing for the abolishment of Executive Presidency.
Speaking with regard to the unrest that took place on 09 May, Rajapaksa referred to the incidents as ‘unpleasant and inhumane’.
“Within hours, coordinated attacks took place islandwide that resulted in the death of 9 people and nearly 300 injured. I gravely condemn this“, he said in this regard.
He assured, however, that the Inspector General of Police has been instructed to conduct an impartial inquiry into the matter, adding that the Tri-forces and Police have been ordered to take strict action against those who incite violence, as “violence and hatred must be stopped”.
