The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) has summoned Commander of Army, General Shavendra Silva and IGP C.D. Wickramaratne, tomorrow (12), to obtain statements in connection with their failure to provide adequate security during the clash between violent SLPP supporters and peaceful anti-Government protesters and to uphold rule of law.
Chairperson of HRCSL, former Supreme Court Judge, Justice Rohini Marasinghe, previously condemned the violence targeting peaceful protests by a group of people who made it clear that violence was their intention.
She further condemned the inaction of the Police to prevent the clash adding that the failure of the Police to prepare for this eventuality and to prevent and manage the violence and destruction is a gross failure of public order while noting that an immediate inquiry should be conducted into the incident.
Violence escalated all over the country, when a large number of former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa supporters attacked peaceful protesters at the GotaGoGama protest site at Galle Face in Colombo on 9 Monday killing 8 and injuring dozens.
