Homes, offices of politicos stoned, set alight


The homes of several former Ministers and Parliamentarians representing the Anuradhapura District, as well as the homes of local politicians and hotels, were stoned and set on fire on 9 May night.

The house and hotel of former Minister S.M. Chandrasena, who ran the Kurundankulama office in Anuradhapura, former Minister Channa Jayasumana’s office near the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital, former Minister Shehan Semasinghe at Airport Road, Anuradhapura, and the houses of former State Minister Duminda Dissanayake and Anuradhapura Mayor H.P. Somadasa were destroyed.

The house where former North Central Province Chief Minister S.M. Ranjith’s office was located was also attacked with stones, and the house was damaged.

Anuradhapura Municipal Councillor Kumuduni Gunasena’s house, near the old bus stand, was also attacked and set on fire. The Anuradhapura Municipal Council official’s residence, which houses the office of Anuradhapura District Parliamentarian Uddika Premaratne, was also stoned.

Meanwhile, the house and hotel of a woman named ‘Gnana Akka,’ who runs a devalaya in Anuradhapura, were attacked with stones and set on fire on Aluth Nuwara Road in Anuradhapura. Following the arson attack on the house and hotel, Army personnel were seen guarding the homes of other former Ministers and Parliamentarians.

The rocks and arson caused extensive damage to office equipment, home appliances, and property. Police are investigating the incident and determining the extent of the damage.
