Defence Secretary Kamal Gunaratne today (11) confirmed that former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa is currently at the Naval Base in Trincomalee, for security reasons.

Speaking at a media briefing this afternoon with Army Commander General Shavendra Silva, Gunaratna stated that Rajapaksa is expected to be relocated to a location of his choice, once the country returns to normalcy.

Speaking with regards to the ongoing islandwide curfew, Gunaratne assured that in the event no incidents of violence are reported, it is very likely for it to be lifted tomorrow as scheduled.

If, however, such incidents are reported, he stated that curfew may be extended.

While acknowledging the inconvenience caused to the public as a result of the islandwide curfew, the Defence Secretary urged them to bear with the inconvenience till security is restored within the country, as ‘inconvenience and security are two separate factors’.
