Police personnel, local council Chairman amongst those killed in yesterday’s unrest


Nearly seven deaths have been reported, while over 220 persons were injured after following the unrest that broke out across the country yesterday (09).

The Chairman of the Imaduwa Pradeshiya Sabha A. V. Sarath Kumara died following an attack on his residence last night, while a 24-year-old Police Sub-Inspector died after a tear gas gun exploded during the tensions at Temple Trees.

The Sub-Inspector is said to have died upon admission to the Colombo National Hospital.

Meanwhile, a senior citizen at the GotaGoGama protest in Galle Face died while receiving treatment after suffering a heart attack.

Further, over 220 persons who were injured at both protest sites were admitted to the Colombo National Hospital, while nearly 23 persons were admitted to the Colombo South Teaching Hospital – Kalubowila.

Three persons were killed, while five others were injured following a shooting in Nittambuwa last evening. The deceased were identified as Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Amarakeerthi Athukorala, his driver and a 27-year-old youth.

The five who sustained injuries were later admitted to the Wathupitiwala Hospital.

Two others were also killed in a shooting that took place near the residence of the Chairman of the Weeraketiya Pradeshiya Sabha. 

Eight others were admitted to the Weeraketiya Hospital after sustaining injuries, and were later transferred to the Tangalle Base Hospital.
