Mobs attack prison bus, 58 inmates missing

Three jailors and 10 inmates were injured, while 58 inmates were reported missing after a group of pro-government protesters attacked a prison bus in Thalahena yesterday (09).

A total of 181 inmates were being transported to the Watareka Open Prison Camp after completing their training at construction sites in several locations within Colombo, Commissioner General of Prisons H.M.T.N Upuldeniya said.

Upuldeniya advised the public to assist if approached by any such inmate by handing them over to either the Prison’s Department or the nearest Police Station.

Further, Upuldeniya denied recent media reports claiming that inmates from the Watareka Prison were involved in yesterday’s protests at Galle Face.

A video of a group of pro-government protesters, claiming to be inmates of the Watareka Prison after being confronted by anti-government protesters was recently shared on several media platforms, revealing that they had been escorted by a jailor to attend the meeting which took place at Temple Trees yesterday morning (09).
