Chairman of the SLFP Maithripala Sirisena said that the JVP must pledge their support for the formation of an All-Party Interim Government, just as Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) did. He said that he first proposed an interim government a year ago, but no one cared.
He was speaking at a media briefing held at the SLFP headquarters yesterday (9).
“I am pleased to see that the SJB has agreed to form an interim government in response to our proposals, but the JVP has never stated their position on forming an all-party interim government,” Sirisena said.
He went on to say that if the JVP does not support the formation of an interim government, they must submit a proper proposal outlining how we can form a new government without the President in accordance with the Constitution.
Sirisena claimed that if the Government does not resign, they have two options: the President sacking the Prime Minister using his executive powers, or passing a No-Confidence Motion, and they are prepared to go with either option.
SLFP General Secretary Dayasiri Jayasekera, MPs Duminda Dissanasyake, Lasantha Alagiyawanna and SLFP Senior Deputy Chairman Prof. Rohana Luxman Piyadasa also attended the media briefing.
