Independent MPs call for MR’s arrest

The independent group of MPs yesterday (9), while condemning the attack on nonviolent anti-Government protesters, called for the arrest of former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa for instigating violence.

Addressing a Media briefing held yesterday (9) former President Maithripala Sirisena observed that the attacks were planned ahead with the help of certain Ministers and their thugs.

He said the batons which were used in the attack were inside the buses that brought the people to Temple Trees while adding that there were some Government Ministers at the place of attack.

He also pointed out that the violence had infringed democratic rights and added that everyone involved, including MP Johnston Fernando and Mayor Saman Lal Fernando, are responsible for people’s lives and the current situation.

Sirisena further said that the protesters’ demand for the President and Prime Minister’s resignation are reasonable and such a brutal attack would only receive negative attention internationally while also observing that the outcome of the attack would gradually be seen.

National Freedom Front leader Wimal Weerawansa said they foresaw bloodshed as a result of political instability due to which they called on the Government to let people express their objection by vote. He also said the mobs were forced to carry out the attack.

SLFP General Secretary Dayasiri Jayasekara complained that the people who gathered at Temple Trees were instigated to suppress protesters while Police and forces were weakened. He demanded justice for victims and punishment for those who led the rampage.
