Gehansa claims Girls’ title in style

Gehansa Methnadi, a product of Museaus College, edged counterpart Githmi Fernando in a thrilling two setter (7/6(4), 6/4) to clinch the Girls’ title at the ATF under 14 week 2 concluded at the SLTA clay courts yesterday.

It was a heated clash between Gehansa and Githmi, where Gehansa set the tone from the get-go to frustrate her opponent in the early exchanges. She continued to go for her shots from the outset, in addition to effectively employing the drop shot, which drew repeated errors from her opponent, to wrap up the first set, and maintained her advantage to nudge in front.

In the second set, things were much more competitive, and Githmi’s experience came into play as she scored back-to-back points to put pressure on Gehansa, who held her nerve and bounced back. She was in the driving seat for much of the latter part of the second set and began producing the calibre of tennis that she is well known for, and proved once again that she is one of the country’s brightest prospects and clinched the set and the match after a thrilling battle.
