Following the State of Emergency in the country, the Ministry of Defence announced the immediate cancellation of leave of all security forces personnel. As a result, all personnel have been ordered to report for duty immediately. The President issued a proclamation declaring a State of Emergency in Sri Lanka under the Public Security Ordinance in the Gazette Extraordinary No. 2278/22 dated 6 May 2022.
The Government claimed that the President declared the State of Emergency to ensure political stability, which is a vital to overcome the current socio-economic crisis and ensuring public safety and the uninterrupted supply of essential services.
However, the move has been heavily criticised by many groups, including lawyers, diplomats, international organisations, and human rights organisations, who have expressed concern about the proclamation.
