Sri Devananda edge Dharmasoka in rain-hit encounter


Sri Devananda College, Ambalangoda edged Dharmasoka College, Ambalangoda by 3 wickets (D/L) to clinch the ‘53rd Battle of the Blues’ one day encounter worked off at the Municipal Council Grounds, Ambalangoda on Wednesday (4).

Batting first Dharmasoka were 101-4 when heavy rain interrupted play and the umpires were compelled to limit the innings to 22.3 overs.

Randul Samarahewa played an anchor role to top score with 54 runs, and for his brilliant batting he was adjudged the best batter. Mithila Fernando claimed 3 wickets for 25. Sri Devananda were handed a target of 97 runs off 22 overs (according to D/L method) and they achieved it in 16.2 overs. Skipper Shehan Wickramasinghe leading from the front top scored with a brilliant 51 runs to set up the win, and was named player of the match.

Ishan Anuradha wreaked havoc with Devananda’s batting line-up bagging four-fer, but his effort was too little too late to the turn tables in Dharmasoka’s favour.

Earlier, Sri Devananda registered an easy win in their annual two day encounter with a dominant performance.
