SLFP Public Sector TUs to join hartal

The public sector trade union federation affiliated to the Sri Lanka Nidahas Sevaka Sangamaya will join the countrywide hartal today (6) demanding solutions to the prevailing political turmoil and a suitable salary increment on par with skyrocketing inflation.

General Secretary of the SLFP, Dayasiri Jayasekara, addressing the Media yesterday (5) at SLFP Headquarters said, public sector employees including those in health, ports, telecommunication, railway and postal services will join today’s hartal.

“The only solution to the prevailing crisis is an all-party interim government. This is also the request of Mahanayake Theras, professionals and workers. The President must agree to share his executive powers with Parliament by enabling the 21st Amendment and must take the lead in finding immediate solutions to the prevailing political and economic mess. We have never sought the abolition of the executive presidency. That is because such action will lead to an increase in powers of provincial councils and because the executive presidency is essential in ensuring country’s stability,” Jayasekara added.

Roy de Mel, General Secretary of PSTUF said even though none of the government workers are responsible for the current crises, they will be compelled to face consequences soon as funds may not last to pay salaries after the next two months. He also said there is a shortage of essential drugs and the unions will continue the hartal if the authorities fail to resolve these issues.

Meanwhile, the President of the Government Midwives’ Association Devika Kodithuwakku said that every mother should come forward and join the hartal to build a better future for their children.
