No show for students today

The Education Ministry has not decided on a backup plan to continue academic activities today (6), which are at risk of being disrupted due to a hartal being held across the island by over 1000 trade unions.

Secretary to the Ministry of Education Prof. Kapila Perera said they have asked teachers and principals to be vigilant about academic activities of students because they have been victims of various protests and strikes in the recent past.

When asked if the Ministry of Education has made any plans to conduct academic activities, he said all they could do was to urge trade unions to continue their struggle without interfering with the  academic activities.

Students in several schools in Colombo and the suburbs claimed that they were informed that teachers were applying for sick leave today and that students were asked to remain at home.
