President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has declared a State of Emergency with effect from midnight today (06).
A Gazette Notification pertaining to the matter is due to be released shortly.
The move comes in the wake of several protests across the country, and an islandwide hartal that was underway today with over 1,000 trade unions belonging to various sectors having taken part, demanding that the current Rajapaksa administration leave.
A State of Emergency was declared last month (01 April) as well, ahead of a mass public demonstration against the Government. The proclamation was, however, later revoked at midnight on 05 April.
