Minister of Education Ramesh Pathirana said the education sector will be revamped to meet modern needs in the years to come.
He was speaking at an event held at the Education Ministry premises on 4 May. He said one of the positive aspects he had witnessed in the education sector during 2021 had been students being absorbed into technical and technology streams more than ever.
The Minister said one of his main goals is to allow students to access technical subjects and grant them opportunities to study languages.
He said presently there were 17 State universities and 40 recognised private universities and added that the schooling percentage, which stood at 52 per cent after Independence, had increased to 99 per cent. Pathirana opined that despite the economic meltdown, the Government had been able to expand university slots from 30,000 to 40,000 and to grant an annual salary increment of Rs 30 billion.
