Chamari smashes ton in FairBreak opener


Chamari Athapaththu’s 52-ball century set up a comfortable 8 wicket win for Falcons over Warriors in the opener of the inaugural FairBreak Invitational Tournament in Dubai.

Batting first Warriors posted 177-2 in their allotted 20 overs on the back of brilliant half centuries from Hayley Matthews (58) and Georgia Redmayne (80*). The duo stitched a 90 run partnership for the first wicket before Mariko Hill got the breakthrough to send in-form Hayley Matthews back to the pavilion in the 10th over.

From there onwards, Warriors batting line-up were seen struggling in the middle, but wicketkeeper batter Redmayne revived their innings with an unbeaten 80 runs off 61 deliveries, which included 11 boundaries, to help post a healthy total in their 20 overs.  

The Falcons chase began with two of their best players, skipper Suzie Bates (NZ) and Chamari Athapaththu, and the pair did not disappoint, putting on 133 for the first wicket, before the latter kicked on to help them to a comfortable win for the loss of just 2 wickets. The Sri Lankan star impressed with an unbeaten 107 runs off 55 deliveries which included 13 fours and 5 maximums. This also marked the first century of the tournament. 

Skipper Suzie Bates also contributed with an important 60 runs off 43 deliveries to set up their comfortable win.  Both Sri Lankan representatives featured for their respective sides on Wednesady (4) but had contrasting outcomes, with Udeshika Prabodhani going for 30 in her 3 overs for the Warriors, while Athapaththu’s 107, helped the Falcons chase down 177 with 8 balls to spare.
