100+ TUs to take part in hartal

A 24-hour hartal is set to be launched islandwide today (6), with the participation of Government, semi-government and private sector institutions demanding the resignation of the President, Prime Minister and the Government.

Over hundred trade unions attached to the health, railways, transport, electricity and education sector are slated to join the hartal.

Around 2,000 civic groups have already extended their support for the success of today’s hartal.

Trade unions warned that they will resort to continuous strike action with effect from 11 May if the Government fails to respond positively today.

They also requested those engaging in today’s hartal not to damage public property or to resort to any kind of violence during the course of their strike.

Meanwhile, Lanka Teachers’ Union, General Secretary Joseph Stalin stated that they too will take part in today’s hartal to compel the President and the Government to step down over their inability to resolve the issues of the masses.
