Ranil urges protecting banking, financial system

Requesting Finance Minister Ali Sabry to make his own decisions, UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday (4) said, in Parliament, the Government should take immediate steps to protect the banking and financial system in the country.

Making a statement in Parliament, Wickremesinghe said, “I request Finance Minister Ali Sabry to make his own decisions.

Do not let any official act in a reckless manner. We have to study the situation of the country and make our decisions wisely. For example, SriLankan Airlines must be informed not to lease any aircraft without obtaining approval from Parliament.”

He queried what had happened to the Fuel Stabilisation Fund set up in 2020.

“What happened to the money in this fund? If there is no money in the fund, relevant officials should be punished. There are many steps we have to take to overcome this crisis. If we are to obtain support from other countries, we have to build good diplomatic relations with them.

“It was the private sector that demanded a tax cut soon after the present government came to power, not the state sector. When I tried to make some changes, the private sector became irritated with me. They opposed every reform I introduced. At the end, it was not Gota, but I was the one who had to go home. However, I have returned.  I also propose financial advisory committees, as it is Parliament which has power over finances,” he said.
