Private buses to go on strike

Private buses will not operate from midnight today (05), Chairman of the Lanka Private Bus Owners’ Association (LPBOA), Gemunu Wijeratne said.

The islandwide strike was announced in view of tomorrow’s hartal, Wijeratne explained, as a show of support to the protesters.

An islandwide hartal is scheduled to take place tomorrow (06), with several trade unions from various sectors participating, demanding that the current Rajapaksa administration leave.

Moreover, a severe diesel shortage has also affected the operation of buses and other sectors in Sri Lanka.

Speaking in Parliament today, Minister of Energy Kanchana Wijesekara noted that despite the country’s requirement of 4,000 MT of diesel, only 1,000 – 1,500 MT of diesel is being released daily.

He added that although a shipment of diesel is expected to arrive on Wednesday (11), it is reportedly getting delayed by two days.
