Three hundred and nine people from 96 families, in Nine Divisions under the Galle Divisional Secretariat, had been affected by floods, while 55 houses in the area had been partially damaged, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said.
As a result of the prevalent torrential rain in the Galle District, the water levels in Gin Ganga had exceeded spill level, flooding several low-lying areas.
The Galle District DMC said, an individual from the Divithura Divisional Secretariat had died after being swept away by the Gin Ganga’s gushing water.
According to DMC sources, Baddegama and Thawalama have been inundated by the overflowing river.
Sources added that sluice gates in Gintota and Mahamodara had been opened for the water levels in Gin Ganga to recede.
