The CID on Tuesday (3) informed Colombo Additional Magistrate Manjula Ratnayake, that the Attorney General had instructed them to conclude the probe against Northern Provincial Council (NPC) member M.K. Shivajilingam, who has been charged with expressing views aimed at heightening racial tensions, by staging a media conference in Jaffna.
They stated that after the completion of the probe against the NPC member, the case abstracts had been submitted for the perusal of the AG.
The CID said that upon perusal of the case abstracts, the AG had conveyed to them that no criminal action had been evident to file charges against Shivajilingam and hence they sought approval from the Court to conclude the trial proceedings.
Accordingly, the Court granted approval to conclude the trial proceedings. Ven. Buttala Jinawansa Thera had lodged a complaint with the CID that remarks made by the NPC member, via a media conference held on 9 May five years ago in Jaffna, had heightened racial tensions among different ethnic communities in the country.
