Current Minister of Finance and Justice Ali Sabry has received the portfolio of State Minister of Prison Management and Prisoners’ Rehabilitation.
An Extra Gazette notification (No. 2278/13) was issued in this regard, bestowing Sabry with the title.
As per the relevant Gazette, Sabry’s appointment is effective from 26 April 2022.
Sabry was sworn in as the Minister of Finance on 04 April, after which he was later sworn in as the Minister of Justice on 26 April, despite having resigned from the post on 03 April.
Similarly, nearly 24 hours after his appointment as the Minister of Finance, Sabry announced his resignation from the post, claiming to have accepted the post only as an ‘interim measure’. He later returned to the position on 08 April, however, and was set to head the government’s negotiating team at the International Monetary Fund.
Former State Minister of Prison Management and Prisoners’ Rehabilitation, Lohan Ratwatte, resigned from the post following public outcry after he allegedly threatened to kill two ethnic minority prisoners in the Anuradhapura prison, On a later date, Ratwatte had visited the Welikada prison under the influence, claiming to have wanted to show his friend the gallows.
Ratwatte tendered his resignation to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa on 15 September 2021, after accepting responsibility for both incidents.
