Speaker of the House Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana says the President has accepted the resignation letter of Ranjith Siyambalapitiya from the post of Deputy Speaker.
Siyambalapitiya said he directed his letter of resignation to the President on two occasions, however, the Head of State refused to accept it, asserting that parliamentary democracy needs to be maintained.
Addressing a media briefing on 30 April, Siyambalapitiya said he would remain in his position only until the end of April.
His decision to resign from the post of Deputy Speaker comes after the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) decided it would represent the Parliament independently.
