Motorcyclist killed in collision with defender


Police arrested three people, including a 14-year-old boy, in connection with an accident involving a defender and a motorcycle, in Kuliyapitiya last night, which resulted in the death of the motorcyclist.

The accident had occurred in the Kanadulla area in Kuliyapitiya when the Defender had collided with the motorcycle, killing the motorcyclist on the spot.

The deceased was a 38-year-old Kanadulla resident of Kuliyapitiya.

According to the Police spokesman, three people were arrested, including the driver of the Defender as well as a 14-year-old boy.

Meanwhile it is reported that a group of residents who were angered by the incident had attacked the Defender and torched it as police officers had attempted to escort it to the police station.

Man commits suicide

A 60- year old man had taken his life because he was unable to face the economic pressure. The deceased has been identified as a resident of Galgamuwa – Walaswewa.

He lived with his wife in a hut and worked as a chena farmer and hired labourer. The deceased had been cultivating paddy but that too came a cropper due to the lack of fertiliser. The couple had been living under trying circumstances over a period of time and were unable to even have a square meal in the face of the current crisis.

The man had left the house on the morning of the 29th and had not returned until evening. It is reported that the body of the deceased was found hanging from a tree. The granddaughter had seen the body on her way to the chena.
