Malwathu Maha Nayaka refuses to meet politicians

Most Ven. Thibbatuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Mahanayaka Thera of the Malwathu Chapter, of the Siam Nikaya, has decided that no politician will be permitted to visit him as they have failed to give a positive response to his proposals to provide solutions for the current crises in the country.

When Opposition Leader, Sajith Premadasa, who visited Kandy to present proposals of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), in terms of the 21st Amendment to the Constitution to the Mahanayaka Thera, he was not allowed to see the Prelate. As a result, Premadasa only visited the Mahanayaka Thera of the Asgiriya Chapter.

It is reported that a group of Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) backbenchers had sought permission to visit the Malwathu Mahanayaka Thera and were also not permitted to visit the Thera.

On the 4 April, the Mahanayaka Theras of the three Sects sent a letter to the President, the Prime Minister and the Party leaders regarding the current situation in the country which also included several proposals to be implemented.

The proposals included appointing an all-party interim Government. In response, the President sent a letter to the Mahanayaka Theras stating that he agrees to form an all-party Interim Government.

Submitting the proposals, the Mahanayaka Theras warned that if the country’s political leadership does not create political stability and resolve the economic crisis, the Maha Sangha of the three Sects would unite and take action to declare a Sangha Convention.
