The Health Minister, Prof. Channa Jayasumana, rescinded the Gazette which was to be implemented by midnight on 30 April 2022 which made the Covid-19 vaccine card mandatory to enter public places.
Health Ministry sources said Prof. Jayasumana took steps even before 30 April to annul the Gazette which had been issued during his predecessor Keheliya Rambukwella’s tenure as Minister of Health. People would have been prohibited from entering public places had they not been fully vaccinated against the coronavirus with the first, second and booster doses by Sunday (1) should it have been implemented, they said.
There were several impracticalities in implementing such a Gazette.
Responding to questions with regard to the Covid situation, they said the number of Covid cases had dwindled to 11 by 1 May 2022 with the Covid death toll having plummeted to two by 30 April 2022.
