Ranjith Siyambalapitiya, Deputy Speaker, resigned from his position with effect from 30 April.
During a media briefing, he stated that a new Deputy Speaker will be appointed at the next parliamentary session this week, and that he handed over a letter to the President and Speaker of Parliament last week informing them that he would no longer serve as Deputy Speaker.
He resigned earlier this month but later decided to stay until the end of April.
Siyambalapitiya recalled that he told Parliament he would only be in office until the end of April.
He said he had refused any perks offered by Parliament and hoped that the country’s current crisis would be resolved by the end of April.
However, he claims that the crisis appears to be dragging on.
