President should apologise to people – Ven. Sobhitha

Ven. Dr. Omalpe Sobhitha Thera said,  President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has failed in every step he has taken and that he should apologise to the people for these failures. He raised these concerns at the Sangha Convention at Independence Square in the afternoon of 30 April.

He also emphasised that the pledges made by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa,on the presidential election platform, was only a pipe dream.

“President Rajapaksa’s promises have turned into a pipe dream for us and today a country has become an orphan. What did we discover? During their two years in power, they have only shared power among their allies and family members to create opportunities for the country’s wealth to be plundered; now, the country is gradually deteriorating economically, and fraud and corruption have contributed to the economic downturn,” he said.

In addition, he said the President has apologised to the nation for the fraudulent activities involving fertiliser.

The Thera also said the recent decision taken by the Maha Nayaka Theras was correct.

He said the President had stressed the importance of removing the Prime Minister and Cabinet which came under his purview and establishing an interim Government with representation from all parties.

The Thera said the President had failed to fulfil his duty to the country.

“The Government’s responsibility to provide protection to the people in accordance with religion, to safeguard the people’s way of life, and to safeguard their livelihood which was now in disarray. Accept failure and abide by the orders made by the Venerable Maha Nayaka Theras,” he said.

Ven. Sobhitha Thera warned that if the President did not act as instructed, they would inform the Maha Sangha of the island and take stern action against the President, the Prime Minister and the Government through a joint Sangha Convention.
