Govt must understand people’s demands – Sirisena

Despite the fact that the incumbent President took over a prosperous country, SLFP Leader Maithripala Sirisena claimed the current economic crisis has resulted in over 200,000 – 300,000 people facing hunger and starvation.

Participating in the SLFP May Day rally yesterday (1), the former President noted the Government must understand the people’s demands.

The former President said the people’s need is that the Leaders of the Government resign, and that elections be held to elect a new government.

Farmers, trade union leaders, and others marched from Polonnaruwa Pola Junction to Hospital Junction yesterday, and other labour-related celebrations were also held.

Speaking at the event, SLFP General Secretary Dayasiri Jayasekara underlined the current Government is an example of arrogance and idiocy.

Jayasekara said the Government’s stand and situation becomes clear when its chief spokesmen are MPs such as Mahindananda Aluthgamage, Rohitha Abeygunawardena and Johnston Fernando, adding that no educated man was given time to speak in Parliament.
