Fertiliser price formula in the offing

In a bid to reduce and control fertiliser prices in the market, the Ministry of Agriculture will take steps to implement a fertiliser price formula for companies that import fertiliser.

To address farmers’ concerns about the private sector importing fertiliser and selling them at high prices, arrangements will be made to import chemical fertiliser through the two government-owned fertiliser companies and provide them to farmers at concessionary and reasonable prices.

Minister of Agriculture Janaka Wakkumbura said steps will be taken to provide farmers with chemical fertiliser as soon as possible.

He made this observation while taking part in a discussion with representatives of the Polonnaruwa District Farmers’ Association, at the Ministry of Agriculture yesterday (1).

In addition, the Minister stated that the Government had already taken steps to import a portion of the required fertiliser for the Yala season and provide it to farmers as soon as possible, adding that necessary arrangements have already been made to provide the required chemical fertiliser for the Maha season.

State Minister of Agriculture Shantha Bandara, Minister of State for Mahaweli Siripala Gamlath, Polonnaruwa District Parliamentarian Amarakeerthi Athukorala, Secretary to the Ministry of Agriculture, Fertiliser Secretariat officials and representatives of the Polonnaruwa District Farmers’ Organisations were present.
