Githmi Fernando continued her brilliant form to overcome Ivanka Samarasinghe of USA in a comfortable two setter (6/2, 3/0 retired) to clinch the Girls title at the ATF Under 14 week one fixture worked off at SLTA clay courts on Friday.
In a tightly contested first set both Githmi and Ivanka were searching for a break in their serves to get an early lead. However, after a brilliant rally Githmi dominated play to win the first set 6/2 and rattle her opponent.
Githmi was put to the test by Ivanka in the second set, as she fought back hard and put up a decent fight to stay alive in the match, but unfortunately had to retire hurt midway in the second set to hand Githmi the title.
Meanwhile, in the Boys’ final India’s Om Verma outplayed Germany’s Louis Eliah Knese in a thrilling two setter (6/2, 6/4) to bag title.
The action packed tournament took centre stage from 25-29 April at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association clay court.
