FR filed seeking compensation for farmers


A Fundamental Rights petition was filed before the Supreme Court on Friday (29 April), seeking compensation on behalf of the farmers, for crop damage and the impact of the policy decision of the Government to ban the importation of chemical fertiliser. 

Ten respondents, including the Attorney General, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, former Minister of Agriculture Mahindananda Aluthgamage, former Plantation Minister Ramesh Pathirana, former Agriculture Secretary Prof. Udith Jayasinghe, MP Ven. Athuraliye Rathana Thera were named in the Petition.

It was stated in the Petition that the decision to ban the importation of Chemical fertiliser was made without a proper study and plan and has thereby immensely affected farmers, reducing their crop yield. The Petition was filed by Attorneys-at-Law Tharaka Nanayakkara and Eranda Weliange together with the Secretary to the Kodagoda Farmers Organisation Thilakawansha Amaradivakara.
