SPMC manufactures thyroid drug


The drug ‘Levothyroxine’ a drug prescribed for patients with ailments of the thyroid gland is now being manufactured by the State Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Corporation (SPMC) was handed over to the Medical Supplies Division (MSD).

A senior official of the Ministry yesterday (28) said 50 mcg tablet of the ‘Levothyroxine’ was handed over to the MSD in special blister packs. Until recently, the thyroid drug was imported in bulk and packeted by the dispenser in state hospital pharmacies for patients. The SPMC presented the drug to Health Minister Channa Jayasumana to be handed over to the MSD.

SPMC sources said primarily a total 60 million 50mcg tablets would be produced for state sector hospitals while the SPMC would also be able to produce the quantities required for the private sector in the weeks to come.
