On the directive of IGP C.D. Wickramaratne, the CID yesterday (28), arrested former Kegalle SSP K.B. Keerthiratne who ordered Police to open fire at protesters in Rambukkana resulting in the death of one and injuring several others. The SSP was receiving treatment at the Police Hospital when he was arrested.
The CID also arrested three Police officers in Kundasale who were allegedly part of the shooting.
Wickramaratne ordered the CID to take immediate action on the Court Order issued by the Kegalle Magistrate to arrest the SSP and the officers involved in the shooting. The Order was issued by Kegalle Magistrate Wasana Navaratne on 27 April when the case was taken up, while observing that a protester had died of severe blood loss according to the Judicial Medical Officer.
The request made by Counsel, appearing for the aggrieved party, to impose a travel ban on the suspects was also accepted by the Magistrate.
A civilian was killed while a dozen others were injured on 19 April when Police opened fire to disperse an angry mob blocking the main railway line and the main road in Rambukkana. Protests erupted at a Rambukkana fuel station as fuel bowsers did not unload stock until prices increased on the night of 18 April.
President’s Counsel Rienzie Arsecularatne, Sarath Jayamanne, Upul Jayasuriya, and Attorney-at-Law Chaminda Korala appeared for the aggrieved party, while Attorney-at-Law Upali Mohotti appeared for the Bar Association of Sri Lanka to make observations when the case was taken up on 27 April.
