The Teachers’ and Principals’ Trade Union Alliance confirmed that over 240,000 teachers and 16,000 principals are expected to participate in the mass trade union action under the theme of ‘Let’s get rid of oppressive Government’ , today (28).
Addressing the media, yesterday (27), Ceylon Teachers’ Union (CTU) General Secretary, Joseph Stalin, said they were going ahead with the trade union action since the Government has failed to take any action.
“The whole country will be inactive due to this protest of all sectors. We engaged in an islandwide trade union action with the participation of all teachers, principals and teaching instructors on 25 April demanding the present administration to step down immediately,” added Stalin.
He said a majority of teachers will join the trade union action calling the Government to step down.
Meanwhile, Ceylon Teachers’ Service Union (CTSU) Mahinda Jayasinghe said, “To make any academic purpose a success we have to secure our country first. Therefore, we will halt academic activities and support the mass trade union action to support the protest against this Government.”
This government has done nothing to develop the collapsed education sector in these two years. We made several requests in various ways, yet they turned a blind eye,” he added.
