STF arrests sandalwood smugglers


The STF arrested two individuals for possessing 787 kg of sandalwood worth approximately Rs 16 million. Based on a tip-off received by officers of the STF Intelligence Division on 26 April, a pottery kiln in Udawalawa was raided. The suspects have been handed over to the Embilipitiya Forest Reserve Office for investigations.

According to Customs, Sandalwood (Santalum album) is a protected species under the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance. Exporting sandalwood products is prohibited under the Forest Conservation Ordinance and Customs Ordinance.
