Colombo Additional Magistrate T.N.L. Mahawatta yesterday (27), ordered the suspect Police Constable attached to the Gothatuwa Police Station to be remanded till 12 May.
He was produced on charges of trafficking a stock of narcotics that had been kept as Court productions, at the Production Room of the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court.
The suspect had served at the Legal Affairs Division of the Gothatuwa Police Station.
The suspect had been held in detention by the Police Narcotic Bureau (PNB), before being produced in Court. The PNB making submissions stated that they were yet probing the incident.
The PNB told Magistrate Mahawatta, that K. Gamunu Sampath, who was in charge of the Court Productions Room, would be named as the second suspect in the case and urged to impound his passport as well.
The PNB then requested Court, to issue an order for an independent team to probe the case.
They urged Court to issue an order to submit a report containing details related to the stock of narcotics kept in the Production Room. It should include details of production and the officer-in-charge who overlooked the productions.
The PNB had previously informed Court that on 21 April, they had nabbed a suspect in the Wellampitiya Police Division, in the possession of 48 g of narcotics.
They stated that on grilling him, the suspect revealed that the stock of illicit drugs had been supplied to him, by a constable attached to the Gothatuwa Police.
The PNB had further told Court, that having phoned the PC via his mobile phone, the suspect was coaxed to be present at a parking lot in the Gothatuwa area and that on inspection found 750g of narcotics in his possession and he was arrested.
