Remains to be exhumed today

Kalmunai Magistrate’s Court granted permission to exhume the remains of those who died in the 2019 Sainthamaruthu suicide bomb blast at National Thowheeth Jama’at Leader Zaharan Hashim’s residence in Sainthamaruthu.

Police said the remains, buried at Ampara cemetery, will be exhumed today (27), in the presence of the Ampara Magistrate and Senior Superintendent of Police, Attorney-at-Law Nihal Thalduwa said. The relevant Judicial Medical Officer and Police officers who were involved  in the initial investigations and officials of the Government Analyst Department will also be present.

It has been three years since the blast and investigators are trying to find out whether the remains of Pulasthini Mahendran alias Sarah Jasmine, wife of Atchchi Muhammadu Muhammadu Hastun, who carried out the suicide bombing at St. Sebastian’s Church in Katuwapitiya, are among those who died inside Zaharan’s house in Sainthamaruthu, by re-examining the remains. DNA tests had been performed on two earlier occasions to determine the identity of Sarah Jasmine. However, previous results did not reveal that Sarah Jasmine’s body was among the remains.
