Lanka Cavaliers beat Old Antonians in thriller

 In a keenly contest match, Lanka Cavaliers beat Old Antonian’s Kandy by 6 runs in their Masters 30 over cricket encounter played for the Bernard Perera Memorial Trophy in Kandy recently. 

Batting first, Lanka Cavaliers openers Wasanthalal Fernando and Sujith Perera put up a 34 runs partnership. With the dismissal of Wasanthalal, Suranjith Dharmasena joined Sujith and the pair got the scoreboard ticking with 88 runs partnership for the second wicket. After a gallant knock of 51 runs, Sujith decided to retire. Suranjith took on the bowlers and played a splendid innings to score a well compiled 49*, falling short of a well-deserved half century by one run. Lanka Cavaliers scored 141/3 in their 30 overs. Chintaka, Suresh and Asela Herath shared the bowling honors with a wicket each. 

 In reply, Old Antonian’s lost two early wickets with the score reading 39, but Indika Fernando (20) and Suresh (35) took the score to 88 runs before both were dismissed. With their dismissal, wickets fell at regular intervals. However, Chintaka Girihigama stayed till the end, playing a magnificent innings of 24*, but Old Antonian’s fell short of the target by 6 runs in the end.

 A fine bowling performance by stalwart Sirosha Gunathilake with two vital scalps, who was well supported by Niranjan Dabare, who also claimed 2 wickets, turned the tide in favour of Lanka Cavaliers. Renuka Nonis, Krishan Dharmasena and Mahesh Wijenayake snared one wicket each.
