K’sene shortage impacts Agri, Fisheries sectors

The future of the agriculture and fisheries sectors is uncertain owing to the current kerosene shortage, said the Tamil Eelam Liberation Organization (TELO) Youth Wing Leader and former member of the Northern Provincial Council, Saba Kugadas.

Agriculture and Fisheries are the two major sectors that vastly contribute to the national economy. However, due to the current kerosene shortage, they are unable to carry out day-to-day activities and they were forced to bear huge losses, he said.

“Last year, the harvest was reduced due to the fertiliser shortage issue and the country was forced to import rice from other countries. Similarly, this year also the harvest was reduced. As a result, prices of essentials have increased drastically. People’s lives have been severely affected. They are struggling every day to fulfil their daily needs,” said Kugadas.

He further said that many fisheries communities in the country have lost their income as they have no kerosene to do fishing. Even after increasing the prices of everything, still, the country is facing a shortage. People are still fighting to buy the essentials by standing in long queues.

“Not only agriculture and fisheries sectors, but also other important sectors which vastly contribute to the national economy have been affected due to the current situation of the country. We hope that everything will be better in the future,” he said.
