Kalmunai protesters take to streets with torches

A protest organised by Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) was held at Kalmunai Municipal Council United Square, led by Ampara District SJB Working Committee member A. Adambava on 24 April, as part of a series of ongoing protests against the Government.

With fire torches in their hands, the protesters expressed their opposition to the rising cost of living, the skyrocketing price of essential commodities and fuel, and the imprudent governance of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

The protest was organised under the theme ‘Let’s get rid of the 74-year curse’ and ‘Let’s get rid of the Government that oppresses the people.’

Protesters chanted anti-government slogans such as ‘where is the robbed money?’ ‘There is no gas to light the hearth,’ ‘We don’t want Basil,’ ‘We don’t want Gota,’ ‘Step down Gota, Go home Gota,’ ‘There is nothing in the county,’ ‘Everywhere there is famine in the country,’ ‘There is no fuel to run vehicles,’ ‘Give us fuel,’ ‘Step down Basil,’ ‘There is no milk powder to feed kids,’ ‘Continuous power outages have severely impacted children’s education,’ and so on. Former JVP Ampara District MP Wasantha Piyatissa, regional organisers of SJB, and a large number of members of the public also took part in the protest.
