Big onion production in Dambulla has dropped by 90 per cent following the fertiliser shortage and sky rocketing fuel prices, Dambulla Big Onion Cultivators’ Society President Nimal Priyankara said yesterday (26).
He said big onion is cultivated on a massive scale in several areas in the Matale District, predominantly in Dambulla, Galewela and Naula in the Yala Season. “Farmers are facing great difficulties getting fuel required for their water pumps.
This has also hindered big onion cultivation in the Matale District as well as in other parts in the country.
Usually farmers in the Matale District would start big onion cultivation with the Sinhala Tamil New Year celebration.
