Bring in suitable candidate through National List – BASL

If a mutual agreement on who should be appointed as Prime Minister cannot be arrived at on consultation of political parties representing Parliament, a suitable National List MP should be appointed to serve in this position, the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) said.

Speaking on a programme aired on a private television channel yesterday (26), BASL President, President’s Counsel Saliya Pieris said the standard practice would be for MPs to collectively nominate an MP as the Prime Minister in this situation, adding however that in the absence of this nomination, an MP should be appointed through the National List and should be made Prime Minister.

He further said all political parties should work together and that repeated calls have been made for the establishment of an Interim Government, as the Government has faced an unprecedented crisis.
