Tamil Union dominates Sebastianites to clinch title


An all-round performance steered Tamil Union C & AC to a comfortable 44 run win over Sebastianites C & AC in the final and emerge champion of the SLC Major Club Emerging 3-Day Tournament yesterday at SSC.

Earlier, Sebastianites won the toss and put Tamil Union in to bat, and they launched their title bid on scoring 254 in 71.5 overs on day one. The positive take off by Tamil Union was fronted by Ravindu Fernando who stroked a workmanlike 76 off 167 balls inclusive of 6 boundaries and a six.

In reply, Sebastianites lost the plot from the get go and were bowled out for 167 runs in 67.1 overs. Vimud Sapnaka was the only batter among the runs scoring 46. Dilum Sudeera was the pick of the bowlers claiming 7 wickets for 65 runs.

Sebastianites did well to bowl out Tamil Union for a meagre 123 runs in 45 overs in their second inning. Dilum Sudeera (36), Santhush Gunathilake (32), Navod Paranavithana (14) and Raveen de Silva (14) helped to build their innings. Manelker de Silva claimed 5 wickets for 27 and Tharindu Rathnayake claimed 4 wickets.

Sebastianites were set a target of 211 runs to win the game, but their poor form with the bat continued as they were bowled out for 166 runs in 57.4 overs. Vimud Sapnaka (52) was the lone warrior with the bat once again, as none of the other batters impressed. But his little cameo was too little too late to take his team over the line.

Dilum Sudeera once again shone with the ball claiming 5 wickets for 61 runs for a match bag of 12 wickets for 126 runs.

Avishka Perera (Colts CC) and Kaumal Nanayakkara (Army CC) were adjudicated best batter and best bowler of the tournament.
